On this page

The best dishwasher for most Indian homes is the Bosch 13 Place Setting freestanding dishwasher (SMS66GW01I) at around ₹45,490. Its 6 wash programs include a 70°C Intensive Kadhai program for oily pots.

Its Eco program, which saves water and power, uses 9.5 litres a wash on Bosch's standard test, and its Amazon.in listing claims A+++ on the European energy scale (not a BEE star rating). Its 13 place settings, each one person's set of dishes, suit a family of four to six.

On Amazon.in, 2,328 buyers rate it 4.2, the most reviews of any dishwasher here. We compared six dishwashers using each maker's spec sheet or listing, and worked out what a wash costs on the four whose makers publish an energy figure.

Water is each maker's published figure, and heavy programs use more. Both Bosch figures come from the standard Eco test, and their sheets list more for Eco 50. IFB gives 12 litres a cycle, the Faber countertop 8, the Faber 12-place 10 to 17 across programs, and LG about 9.6, depending on the cycle.

Can a dishwasher clean Indian utensils?

Yes, if it has a hot heavy-duty program and you load it the way the maker shows. Bosch's Intensive Kadhai program runs at 70°C, IFB's Pots and Pans program at 65°C, and LG adds steam. Bosch, IFB and LG each show a kadhai and a 5-litre pressure cooker in their loading guides.

  • Scrape, don't rinse. Detergent maker Finish says its Quantum tablets let you skip the pre-rinse.
  • Oily kadhais and tadka pans go face down on the lower rack, on the intensive program. Burnt-on milk or dal may still need a soak.
  • Pressure cookers. Wash the rubber gasket and whistle by hand, and check the cooker's care guide first.
  • Keep out wooden spoons, cast-iron tawas and non-stick pans not marked dishwasher-safe.

How many place settings do you need?

Choose 8 place settings for one to three people, 12 or 13 for a family of four or five, and 14 or 15 if you are six or more or cook two big meals a day. Indian meals use more bowls and serving pots than a place setting allows for, so round up, not down.

A place setting is one person's dinner plate, dessert plate, glass, soup bowl, cup with saucer and cutlery, as Faber's listing defines it. Kadhais and cookers are extra. Bosch says its 13-place model fits 12 dinner plates, 6 small plates, 12 bowls, a kadhai, a 5-litre cooker and 2 tawas in one load.

How much does a dishwasher cost to run per wash?

Around ₹28 to ₹29 a wash on the Bosch and IFB picks, or about ₹850 to ₹870 a month at one wash a day. Electricity and water on an Eco wash come to ₹8 to ₹9 of that, and a detergent tablet to about ₹20.

How we worked it out: we took each maker's published electricity use in kWh (one kWh is one unit on your bill) and water in litres for one Eco wash. We priced electricity at ₹8 a unit, the top domestic slab in Tata Power-DDL's Delhi tariff.

We priced water at ₹0.07 a litre, Delhi Jal Board's top domestic rate (₹43.93 per kilolitre plus a 60% sewer charge) in its citizen's charter. We chose the top rates on purpose, so most homes will pay less. The tablet is a Finish Quantum at ₹20 (50 for ₹1,000 on Amazon.in).

  • Detergent is the biggest cost. IFB's 1 kg Autodish powder costs ₹340, about ₹6.80 a wash at 20 g (our assumption, so follow your manual and use more for heavy loads). Using powder instead of a tablet cuts the total to around ₹15 to ₹16 a wash. Salt (₹156 a kilo from IFB) and rinse aid add a little more.
  • The power gap is small. The IFB uses 0.1 kWh less per wash than the 13-place Bosch, about ₹25 a month.
  • Water costs ₹1.20 a wash or less even at Delhi's top rate, the top being the Faber 12-place's 17-litre program. Bosch's 13-place listing says washing the same load by hand takes at least 20 litres.

Bosch's spec sheet gives 9.5 litres for its standard Eco test, 1.037 kWh and a noise level of 52 dB (lower dB means quieter). The same sheet lists 13 litres for the Eco 50 program, and prints 14 place settings on page 1 against 13 on page 2. We use 13, as the listing does.

Its listing claims an A+++ energy class. The warranty is 2 years, plus 10 years against rust-through on the inner tub. It measures 84.5 x 60 x 60 cm.

  • Buy it if you are a family of four to six cooking with oil and masala daily.
  • Worth knowing: the silver SMS66GI01I is the same machine for about ₹3,000 more.

The IFB costs about ₹2,700 less than the Bosch yet fits 14 place settings, one more. This freestanding model has 5 programs, including Pots and Pans at 65°C and Hygiene at 70°C, and IFB's loading guide shows a 5-litre kadhai and a 5-litre cooker inside.

IFB rates an Eco wash at 0.935 kWh and gives 12 litres a cycle, and its listing claims A++. An inbuilt heater takes the water to 70°C, Power Steam helps drying, and the softener handles water up to 800 ppm hardness. It has Flexi Half Load and runs at 52 dB.

The warranty is 2 years, and IFB promises spare parts for 8 years. It measures 85 x 59.8 x 59.8 cm.

  • Buy it if you want 14 place settings and a 70°C hygiene wash for less than the Bosch.
  • Worth knowing: it has a quarter of the Bosch's review count.

This is the lowest-priced full-size dishwasher here. The freestanding machine fits 12 place settings and has 6 programs, including Intensive for heavy pots and Eco for daily loads.

Faber's listing gives 1.0 to 1.6 kWh and 10 to 17 litres a wash, depending on the program, and claims A++. It has half load, salt and rinse aid indicators and Aqua Stop leak protection. Faber also lists Power Memory. Ask the dealer whether it resumes a wash after a power cut.

The warranty is 2 years, plus 5 years on the cavity. The listing gives 49 dB, and it measures 84.5 x 59.8 x 60 cm.

  • Buy it if you want a full-size dishwasher for a family of four or five for under ₹30,000.
  • Worth knowing: instead of one Eco figure, Faber gives a range, so its running cost is harder to pin down.

This countertop model suits small kitchens and couples. It fits 8 place settings, and Faber gives its size as 59.5 cm tall, 55 cm wide and 50 cm deep.

It has 6 programs, including Intensive for greasy utensils, and uses 8 litres a wash, says Faber's listing, which also claims A++ but gives no kWh figure, so we could not work out its running cost. Faber says it heats water up to 69°C.

It has half load and salt and rinse aid indicators, and the listing gives 49 dB. The warranty is 2 years, plus 5 years on the cavity, the inner tub.

  • Buy it if counter space is all you have, or you live alone or as a couple.
  • Skip it if you cook for four or more. A kadhai and a cooker leave little room for plates in an 8-place machine.

With 15 place settings, this freestanding Bosch is the largest dishwasher here. Bosch suggests it for five to seven people, and says it fits 2 kadhais, a 5-litre cooker, 2 tawas and 14 dinner plates.

Bosch's spec sheet lists 6 programs, including Intensive at 70°C, plus an Intensive Zone option. Bosch gives 9.5 litres for its standard Eco test and 0.951 kWh for Eco 50, though its sheet lists 11 to 14 litres for the Eco 50 program itself. Bosch's listing claims A+++.

At 46 dB, it is quieter than the 13-place Bosch. It has an inbuilt heater, a softener and half load. The warranty is 2 years, plus 10 years against rust-through. It measures 84.5 x 60 x 60 cm.

  • Buy it if you are a joint family or cook two big meals a day.
  • Worth knowing: it costs ₹13,500 more than the 13-place Bosch for two more place settings.

LG lists this 14-place-setting freestanding dishwasher at 44 dB, the lowest noise figure here. It uses LG's Inverter Direct Drive motor. LG India gives 2 years on parts and labour plus 8 more years on the motor (parts only).

It has 10 programs, including Intensive, Eco and Turbo, which LG says takes about an hour. It also has TrueSteam, half load and Wi-Fi control.

LG's listing gives about 9.6 litres a wash, but LG doesn't publish an energy class or kWh figure for the Indian model. It measures 85 x 60 x 60 cm.

  • Buy it if you want a quiet machine with steam and app control.
  • Worth knowing: with no published energy figure, its running cost is the one number we could not check.

Do dishwasher listings match the spec sheets?

Not always, and noise is where they differ most. Bosch's 13-place listing says 44 dB, but the Bosch SMS66GW01I spec sheet says 52 dB. Siemens' 13-place listing says 42 dB, and Siemens' sheet also says 52 dB. Wherever the two disagreed, we used the maker's sheet.

Bosch's 13-place sheet also lists 13 litres for the Eco 50 program, more than its main 9.5-litre figure, and prints both 13 and 14 place settings. The 15-place sheet lists 11 to 14 litres for Eco 50 against 9.5 litres. IFB's listing names 6 programs, while IFB's own page lists 5.

Do you need salt and rinse aid with hard water?

Yes, unless your water is soft. Dishwasher salt recharges the built-in water softener, which stops white chalky marks on steel and glass. Rinse aid helps dishes dry without spots. IFB says its softener handles water up to 800 ppm hardness, and Bosch's 15-place listing says 880 ppm.

Use only dishwasher detergent, not normal dishwashing liquid. To treat hard drinking water, see our best water purifier for home guide.

What do you need to install a dishwasher?

A tap point, a drain and a power socket within reach, plus about 60 x 60 cm of floor space for a full-size model. Bosch's hoses are 1.5 metres (inlet) and 1.9 metres (outlet), and its 1.75-metre cord ends in a 16 A Indian plug.

  • Space. A full-size model is about 85 cm tall.
  • Water pressure. LG asks for at least 0.05 MPa at the inlet, about the push from a tank 5 metres above the tap. If your overhead tank is just above the kitchen, ask the installer to check.
  • Drain and plumbing are much like a fully automatic machine from our best washing machine guide.
  • Power. Bosch lists a 2,400 W connection rating, and LG 1,600 to 1,800 W. Check your inverter's rating before you run a dishwasher on it. Our inverter guide explains the limits.
  • Is installation free? All six listings show "Brand installation available" on Amazon.in, but none says the visit is free, so ask when you book. Faber says its extended warranty is valid only if its own service centre installs the machine.

Which dishwasher brand is best in India?

Bosch is the safest choice, with the most-reviewed models on Amazon.in and a 10-year rust-through warranty on the tub. IFB gives more capacity for the money, LG is the quietest and adds steam, and Faber covers the budget and countertop picks.

Siemens, from Bosch's parent company BSH, sells a near-identical 13-place model for about ₹7,000 more. Voltas Beko's 8-place DT8B was out of stock, and we found no Haier dishwasher on Amazon.in.

What to check before you buy

  • Place settings. 8 for one to three people, 12 or 13 for four or five, 14 or 15 for six or more.
  • Type. Freestanding for a floor spot, countertop for a small kitchen. Built-in models go into a cabinet, and none of our picks is built-in.
  • Wash programs. A heavy-pots program at 65°C to 70°C, plus Eco for daily loads.
  • Water per wash. 8 to 12 litres on the makers' published figures for these picks, and up to 17 litres on the Faber 12-place's heavier programs. Even that costs about ₹1.20 a wash.
  • Energy rating. A+++ and A++ are the makers' claims. The kWh per Eco wash tells you more.
  • Heater, hygiene and noise. An inbuilt heater and a 70°C hygiene or steam program help with oily pots. Half load saves water. These picks range from 44 to 52 dB.
  • Warranty. 2 years is standard. Bosch adds 10 years on the tub, LG 10 years on the motor (parts only after year 2) and Faber 5 years on the cavity.
  • Price and installation. Compare the selling price, not the MRP, and ask if installation is free.

Which dishwasher should you buy?

For most families, buy the Bosch 13 Place (SMS66GW01I) at around ₹45,490. It is the most reviewed dishwasher here, with a 70°C Intensive Kadhai program.

For more space for less money, the IFB Neptune FX14 at around ₹42,790 fits 14 place settings. On a tighter budget, the Faber 12 Place costs around ₹29,990.

Short on space? The Faber 8 Place Countertop goes on the counter. For a big family, the Bosch 15 Place fits the most.

Frequently asked questions

Which dishwasher is best for an Indian kitchen?

For most families, the Bosch 13 Place Setting (SMS66GW01I) at around ₹45,490. Its 70°C Intensive Kadhai program handles oily kadhais and tadka pans, its Eco program uses 9.5 litres on Bosch's standard test, and 2,328 buyers on Amazon.in rate it 4.2. For more capacity for less money, the 14-place IFB Neptune FX14 costs around ₹42,790.

Can a dishwasher clean kadhai and pressure cooker?

Yes, on a hot heavy-duty program. Bosch's Intensive Kadhai program runs at 70°C and IFB's Pots and Pans program at 65°C, and Bosch, IFB and LG all show a kadhai and a 5-litre cooker in their loading guides. Scrape off leftovers first, and wash the cooker's rubber gasket and whistle by hand.

How many place settings do I need for a family of 4?

12 or 13 place settings. Bosch suggests its 13-place model for four to six people, and Faber says its 12-place model suits families of up to six. Indian meals use extra bowls, kadhais and cookers, so choose 14 if you cook two big meals a day or often have guests.

How much does it cost to run a dishwasher in India?

About ₹28 to ₹29 a wash with a ₹20 detergent tablet, or ₹850 to ₹870 a month at one wash a day, based on the makers' Eco figures for the Bosch and IFB picks. Electricity and water come to ₹8 to ₹9 a wash at Delhi's top tariffs. Powder instead of tablets cuts the total to about ₹15 to ₹16.

Is a countertop dishwasher worth it?

Yes, for one to three people or a kitchen with no free floor space. The Faber 8 Place countertop, at around ₹26,739, uses 8 litres a wash and measures 59.5 x 55 x 50 cm. For a family of four or more, Faber's full-size 12-place model costs only about ₹3,250 more.

Do I need salt and rinse aid in a dishwasher?

Yes, unless your water is soft. Salt recharges the dishwasher's built-in water softener, which prevents white marks on steel and glass, and rinse aid helps dishes dry without spots. Use only dishwasher detergent, not normal dishwashing liquid. IFB's salt costs ₹156 a kilo on Amazon.in.
