Top load or front load: which washing machine is better?
A front load washes better and uses far less water, while a top load costs less and is easier to use. The front loads here use about 8 litres of water per kilo of clothes, against 17.5 litres for the LG top load.
They spin at 1200 RPM or faster, so clothes dry quicker, but cost roughly ₹12,000 more.
On a full 7kg load, the LG top load's label works out to about 123 litres per wash. The IFB front load's label works out to about 55 litres. If you wash every day and pay for tanker water, that gap adds up quickly.
Front loads also have a built-in heater. Warm water lifts oil, sweat and turmeric stains that cold water leaves behind. But front-load cycles usually take longer, you have to bend to load them, and the door seal needs a wipe now and then to stop it smelling.
Pick a top load for quick washes, a lower price, and the option to drop in a forgotten sock mid-cycle. Pick a front load if cleaning, water use and gentle handling of good clothes matter more to you.
Can you compare star ratings between top and front loads?
No. The stars are not comparable across types, because the Bureau of Energy Efficiency tests each type differently. Top loads and semi-automatics are rated on a 30°C cotton wash.
Front loads are rated on a 60°C cotton wash, which includes heating the water. So a front load's energy figure always looks higher, even when it is the more efficient machine for your needs.
You can see this in the listings. The LG top load's label shows 0.0088 kWh (electricity units) per kilo of clothes per wash. The IFB front load's label shows 0.045, about five times higher, yet both carry five stars.
Under the current BEE star table, valid until the end of 2026, a top load needs 0.0107 or less for five stars, while a front load needs 0.07 or less.
The practical rule is simple. Use the star rating to compare machines of the same type. To compare a top load with a front load, look at the water figure (litres per kilo per cycle) on the label instead.

This LG gets the basics right and adds a few things that matter in Indian homes. Its BEE label shows 0.0088 kWh per kilo per cycle, the lowest of the top loads here, and it spins at 740 RPM.
TurboDrum spins the drum and the disc at its base in opposite directions for a stronger wash. LG's Smart Inverter motor adjusts its speed to the load.
There is a rat mesh at the base, an auto prewash for dirty clothes, and a delay start of 3 to 18 hours, so you can set it to finish when you wake up.
- Buy it if you want a dependable everyday top load with low power use and a 10-year motor warranty.
- Worth knowing: the whole machine is covered for 2 years. IFB's top load below gives you 4.
Best value: Haier Smart Choice 7kg top load

Haier Smart Choice 7kg Top Load
A 5-star top load for less, and it fills from weak water pressure.
~₹16,390Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹16,390, rated 4.2 from 3,060 buyers.
The Haier costs about ₹3,700 less than the LG and matches its rating. You get a stainless steel drum, 8 wash programs, a 15-minute quick wash and a magic filter that catches lint.
Many homes will value how little water pressure it needs. Haier says it works from as little as 0.01 MPa, which means it can fill from a low-pressure overhead tank where some machines struggle.
- Buy it if you want a 5-star fully automatic machine for the least money, or your building has weak water pressure.
- Worth knowing: it spins at 700 RPM, so clothes come out a little wetter than from the LG.
Most popular top load: Samsung 7kg Ecobubble

Samsung says Ecobubble mixes detergent with air and water before the wash starts, so the foam reaches clothes faster, even in cold water. The diamond drum has small holes that are gentler on fabric, and there are 9 programs to choose from.
Samsung rates it to work across a wide pressure range, 0.01 to 0.78 MPa. Its energy figure, 0.0089 kWh per kilo, is almost the same as the LG's.
- Buy it if you want the most buyer feedback behind your choice and a soft-closing lid.
- Worth knowing: at 4.1, its rating is the lowest of the top loads here, so read recent reviews before you order.

IFB covers the whole machine for 4 years, the motor for 10 years, and promises spare parts for 10 years. Most brands cover the whole machine for only 2 years, so this is the one to pick if repair bills worry you.
It also has a 720 RPM spin, IFB's Deep Clean wash, and an AI feature that IFB says adjusts the wash to each load.
- Buy it if you want the longest cover on a top load and a high rating.
- Worth knowing: it has fewer reviews than the LG or Samsung. As with any brand, check that IFB has a service centre near you before you order.
Best front load washing machine: IFB Serena 7kg

IFB Serena 7kg Front Load

~₹32,190Amazon.in

This is the front load to buy if you want the lowest water use and the longest full warranty. It has a built-in heater, a steam refresh mode for clothes that only need freshening, 1200 RPM spin and WiFi control from your phone.
Its label shows 7.9 litres per kilo per cycle, the lowest water use of any machine on this list. IFB covers it for 4 years in full, the same as its top load.
- Buy it if you want deep cleaning, low water use and 4 years of full cover.
- Skip it if you have no fixed spot near a tap and drain. A front load is heavy and is not meant to be moved around.

LG's front load costs about the same as the IFB and has more than twice as many reviews. Its direct drive motor attaches straight to the drum with no belt, which cuts noise and leaves fewer parts to wear out.
Steam wash and an Allergy Care cycle help with bedsheets and baby clothes, and the heater can take water up to 95°C. Water use is 8.6 litres per kilo per cycle.
- Buy it if you prefer LG's service network or want a quieter front load.
- Worth knowing: LG covers the whole machine for 2 years, against IFB's 4.
Best for big families: Bosch 8kg front load WAJ2826BIN

If you wash for five or six people, the extra kilo of capacity saves you a load or two a week. The Bosch also spins at 1400 RPM, the fastest here, so heavy towels and jeans come out close to dry.
It has 15 programs, a steam hygiene option, a heater and Bosch's AI ActiveWater, which adjusts the water to the size of the load. Bosch covers the motor for 12 years.
- Buy it if you have a large family and want the fastest spin and longest motor cover.
- Skip it if you live alone or as a couple. A 7kg machine is plenty and costs less.
Best semi-automatic washing machine: LG 7kg P7020NGAZ

LG 7kg Semi-Automatic P7020NGAZ
1300 RPM spin, 8,467 ratings, and no tap pressure needed.
~₹12,190Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹12,190, rated 4.4 from 8,467 buyers, the most reviewed machine on this list.
A semi-automatic has two tubs. You wash in one, then move the clothes to the other to spin. It takes more effort, but it does not need a tap connection or steady water pressure, because you fill it with a bucket or hose.
This LG spins at 1300 RPM, faster than any top load here, and its Wind Jet Dry blows air through the spin tub to dry clothes further. It also has LG's Rat Away protection.
- Buy it if your water supply is irregular, or you want a reliable machine for the least money.
- Worth knowing: the wash tub takes 7kg but the spin tub takes 5.5kg, so big loads need two spins. To spend less, the Samsung 7kg semi-automatic is around ₹11,090.
Which brand is best for washing machines in India?
It depends on the type you want. LG has the strongest all-round range, with three picks here, two of them with 10-year motor cover. IFB gives the longest full warranty, 4 years. Samsung has the most-reviewed top load, and Bosch makes the strongest front load for big families. Haier offers the best value.
The brand matters less than the service centre near you. Before you buy, search the brand's website for service centres in your pin code. A good machine from a brand with no local engineer can sit broken for weeks.
What size washing machine do you need?
For most families of three or four, a 7kg machine is the right size. As a rough guide, 6 to 7kg suits 1 to 4 people, 8kg suits 4 to 6, and 9kg or more suits larger families or anyone who washes heavy blankets at home.
The kilogram figure is the weight of dry clothes the drum can take.
A bigger drum is not always better. It costs more, takes more floor space, and many homes end up running it half empty. If you do need room for heavy blankets, the LG 9kg top load is around ₹28,490.
Is a semi-automatic washing machine still worth buying?
Yes, if your water supply is unreliable or your budget is under ₹13,000. A semi-automatic fills by hand, so it works with no tap pressure at all and keeps working through water cuts. It also spins faster than most top loads. The trade-off is effort: you move clothes between tubs yourself.
If you have steady water and can stretch to around ₹16,000, a fully automatic top load like the Haier saves you that effort every day.
What to check before you buy
- Measure the space. Leave room above a top load to open the lid, and room in front of a front load to open the door.
- Check your water pressure. If the tap runs weakly, choose a model that works from 0.01 MPa, like the Haier or Samsung, or a semi-automatic.
- Compare energy stars only within one type. To compare a top load with a front load, compare the litres per kilo on the label.
- Read the warranty line. "10 years on motor" covers only the motor. The full-machine warranty, usually 2 years, is what pays for everything else.
- Look for rat protection. Rats chew through drain pipes and wiring in many Indian homes, so brands now add guards. LG's rat mesh and Rat Away are two examples.
- Think about the heater. Hot washes clean better but use much more power. Use hot washes for bedsheets and stained clothes, not every load.

Which washing machine should you buy?
For most homes, buy the LG 7kg top load T70VBMB1Z at around ₹20,090. It is efficient, well reviewed and backed by a 10-year motor warranty.
To spend less, the Haier Smart Choice 7kg at around ₹16,390 does the same job with a slower spin. If you want the deeper clean of a front load and the lowest water use, the IFB Serena 7kg front load at around ₹32,190 is worth the extra money.
And if your water supply is patchy, the LG 7kg semi-automatic at around ₹12,190 is the safest buy, with more than 8,000 ratings behind it.
