The best laptop under ₹40,000 in India right now is the Acer Aspire Lite with an AMD Ryzen 3 5400U at around ₹39,990. It has a Full HD screen and a metal body. Its 8GB of RAM can be upgraded to 32GB later, which keeps a budget laptop quick for longer.
Fewer laptops sell under ₹40,000 in 2026. In October we could not find any new Windows laptop from HP, Lenovo, Dell or ASUS listed under ₹40,000 on Amazon.in. What is left is a few Acer models and some good Chromebooks, and the six below are the ones worth your money.

Why ₹40,000 buys less in 2026
Memory chips became far more expensive this year, and laptop prices followed. Memory makers moved production toward chips for AI data centres. Industry reports put the rise in DRAM contract prices at 90 to 98 percent in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Big brands raised laptop prices by roughly 15 to 30 percent.
You can see the result on Amazon.in. The HP 15 with a Ryzen 3 7320U is now around ₹48,840. We found no new Windows laptop from Lenovo, Dell or ASUS under ₹40,000 either, so Acer is the only big brand still selling one in this bracket.
So at this price, expect 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a Ryzen 3 processor. That is still enough for study, office work, video calls and streaming. Just choose a laptop whose RAM you can upgrade, and check the processor name carefully.
Is a Ryzen 3 laptop good enough?
Yes, for study, office work, browsing and streaming, a recent Ryzen 3 is enough. The Ryzen 3 5400U and 7330U both use AMD's newer Zen 3 design. On PassMark's benchmarks, the 5400U scores higher than the Ryzen 5 7520U found in many ₹45,000 to ₹50,000 laptops, because the 7520U uses the older Zen 2 design.
There is a quick way to read AMD's 7000-series names. The third digit tells you the design: a 2 (7320U, 7520U) means the older Zen 2, and a 3 (7330U, 7530U) means Zen 3.
Older names like the 5400U follow a different pattern, so look those up on AMD's website. The 5400U is Zen 3, and the 5300U is Zen 2.
We explain the naming in more detail in our guide to the best laptop under ₹50,000.
Best laptop under ₹40,000 overall: Acer Aspire Lite, Ryzen 3 5400U

Acer Aspire Lite, Ryzen 3 5400U
Zen 3 chip, metal body and two RAM slots, upgradable to 32GB.
~₹39,990Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹39,990, rated 4.3 by 3 buyers. The same model with a 512GB SSD costs ₹42,990 and is rated 4.0 by 95 buyers.
This is the safest buy in the bracket. The Ryzen 3 5400U is a Zen 3 chip with 4 cores, 8 threads and 8MB of cache. Acer's listing confirms two memory slots and RAM upgradable to 32GB, so you can add a second 8GB stick later and keep the laptop quick for years.
You get a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS screen, a metal body, a full number pad and a weight of 1.59kg. Ports include one USB-C, one fast USB-A and two older, slower USB-A ports.
- Buy it if you want a dependable Windows laptop for college or office work with room to grow.
- Worth knowing: 256GB fills up quickly. Keep big files on Google Drive or a pen drive, or pay ₹3,000 more for the 512GB version.
Best with MS Office: Acer Aspire (2026), Ryzen 3 5400U

Acer Aspire (2026), Ryzen 3 5400U
Same Zen 3 chip plus Office 2024 and a 2-year warranty.
~₹38,990Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹38,990. New this year, so it has no buyer ratings yet.
On paper this is the best deal here. It has the same Zen 3 processor as our top pick and costs ₹1,000 less. It also adds Microsoft Office Home 2024, a 2-year warranty instead of 1, and a lighter 1.5kg body.
Acer lists the RAM as expandable to 32GB and the SSD as upgradable to 1TB. It also has Wi-Fi 6, a 55Wh battery, a matte anti-glare screen and two USB-C ports.
- Buy it if you need Word, Excel and PowerPoint for college or work. Office alone would cost you several thousand rupees.
- Worth knowing: with no reviews yet, nobody has reported on its screen or keyboard. If that worries you, choose the Aspire Lite above.
Newest processor: Acer Aspire Lite Metal, Ryzen 3 7330U

Acer Aspire Lite Metal, Ryzen 3 7330U
Zen 3 chip, backlit keyboard and a Full HD webcam.
~₹39,990Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹39,990. New this year, so it has no buyer ratings yet.
Like the 5400U, the 7330U is Zen 3, but its top speed is higher, up to 4.3GHz. Where this model really stands out is the extras: a backlit keyboard for typing at night, and a Full HD webcam, which is sharper than the HD cameras on most laptops at this price.
RAM is upgradable to 32GB, the screen is 15.6-inch Full HD IPS, and it weighs 1.65kg.
- Buy it if you work late, take lots of video calls, or want the newest chip in the bracket.
- Worth knowing: it has 4 cores and 8 threads, the same as the 5400U, so do not expect it to feel much faster.
Lowest-priced Windows laptop: Acer Aspire 3, Ryzen 3 5300U

Acer Aspire 3, Ryzen 3 5300U
Windows 11, Full HD IPS and upgradable RAM for less.
~₹37,990Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹37,990. New this year, so it has no buyer ratings yet.
This is the most affordable Windows laptop we would recommend. You still get a Full HD IPS screen, upgradable RAM up to 32GB, and Acer's listing says MS Office comes preinstalled.
The catch is the chip. The 5300U uses the older Zen 2 design with half the cache of the 5400U (4MB against 8MB), so it is a little slower in everyday use. It is also the heaviest pick at 1.79kg.
- Buy it if you need Windows and every ₹1,000 counts.
- Skip it if you can stretch ₹1,000 more. The Aspire (2026) above has a faster chip and a 2-year warranty.
Best for online study: Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11

Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11
Detachable touchscreen with keyboard and pen, rated 4.5.
~₹37,690Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹37,690, rated 4.5 by 72 buyers, the highest rating here.
A Chromebook runs ChromeOS, which is built around the Chrome browser, Google Docs and Android apps instead of Windows programs. For a student whose classes, notes and assignments all live online, that is all you need.
The Duet's 11-inch touchscreen detaches to work as a tablet, and the keyboard and a pen come in the box. Lenovo claims up to 12 hours of battery, and the listed weight is 1.1kg.
- Buy it if the work is online classes, notes, documents and video.
- Skip it if a course needs Windows software such as Tally, AutoCAD or the full desktop version of Excel.
- Worth knowing: the Amazon.in title mentions a Spanish QWERTY keyboard. Check the keyboard photos and questions on the listing before you order.
Best laptop under ₹35,000: ASUS Chromebook CX1405

ASUS Chromebook CX1405
14-inch Full HD anti-glare screen and Wi-Fi 6 for ₹32,090.
~₹32,090Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹32,090, rated 3.8 by 31 buyers.
If your budget stops at ₹35,000, this is the laptop we would buy. It has a 14-inch Full HD anti-glare screen with 300 nits of brightness, 8GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 6 and a 1.39kg body. Two USB-C ports can charge it and drive a monitor.
The Intel N50 is a basic 2-core chip. It handles a browser, Google Docs and YouTube, but it is not built for heavy multitasking.
- Buy it if you want a proper laptop shape and a good screen for browser-based work at the lowest price.
- Worth knowing: storage is 128GB eMMC, which is small and slower than an SSD. Keep big files in the cloud.
Laptops to avoid under ₹40,000
These listings look similar to our picks but cut corners that matter.
- Acer One 15, Ryzen 3 7320U at ₹37,880. A Zen 2 chip, and its LPDDR5 memory is soldered to the board, so you can never upgrade it. Rated 3.5.
- Acer One 14, Ryzen 3 7320U at ₹37,250. The same chip with an HD screen (1366 x 768), which looks noticeably less sharp than Full HD. Rated 3.5.
- Acer Aspire 3, Pentium N6000 at ₹39,890. A slow entry-level chip and an HD screen for nearly ₹40,000. Rated 3.2.
- Any laptop with 4GB of RAM. Windows 11 and Chrome need more. The 4GB HP Chromebook 14 we checked is rated just 2.7.
- Refurbished business laptops sold as new. Listings with an old Core i5 and a big SSD can look like a bargain, but the battery and warranty rarely match a new machine.
Can you buy an HP, Lenovo or Dell laptop under ₹40,000?
Not a new Windows laptop, in October 2026. We checked Amazon.in and found none from HP, Lenovo or Dell under ₹40,000, and none from ASUS either. The most affordable HP 15 is around ₹48,840. Under ₹40,000 these brands only sell Chromebooks or older stock from third-party sellers.
Prices can fall during festival sales, so if a Ryzen 5 7530U or Core i5 laptop from any of these brands drops under ₹40,000 with a card offer, buy it over the Windows picks here.
Is there a gaming laptop under ₹40,000?
No. A laptop with a separate graphics card starts well above ₹40,000. Every laptop here uses graphics built into the processor. That is fine for light and older games at low settings, but big new games will not run smoothly. Our best gaming laptops guide shows the price where proper gaming starts.
What to check before you buy
- Find the RAM details in the listing. "Upgradable", "expandable" or "SODIMM" means you can add RAM later. "Onboard" or "LPDDR5" means you cannot.
- Read the exact processor model. Ignore "generation" labels in the title and look up the model number instead.
- Insist on a Full HD screen. 1920 x 1080 is the minimum. Avoid "HD" panels at this price.
- Check for Windows and Office. Some listings ship without Windows. Office 2024 saves you a separate purchase.
- Check the warranty. Most picks have 1 year. The Aspire (2026) has 2.
- Plan for storage. 256GB is tight. An external drive or cloud storage solves it cheaply.
Buying for a student? Our guide to the best laptops for students also looks at higher budgets.

If all your work happens in a browser, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 at ₹37,690 is the best rated, and the ASUS Chromebook CX1405 at ₹32,090 is the most affordable laptop we would recommend.
