Will a soundbar connect to your TV? HDMI eARC vs ARC vs optical

Yes, if your TV has an HDMI ARC or eARC port, or an optical port. For Dolby Atmos, the format that adds sound from above, use HDMI. eARC passes compressed and lossless Atmos, while ARC passes compressed Atmos only. Optical, Bose says, carries Dolby Digital 5.1 but not Atmos, and Bluetooth suits phone music.

ARC (Audio Return Channel) lets the TV send its sound to the soundbar over one HDMI cable, so smart TV apps play through the bar. eARC (enhanced ARC) is the newer version with room for more data. Dolby recommends eARC whenever both devices have it.

ConnectionDolby Digital 5.1Dolby AtmosPicks with it
HDMI eARCYesYes, compressed and lossless (Dolby TrueHD)JBL SB190, JBL SB590, Sony Bar 6 (only Sony lists Dolby TrueHD)

OpticalYesNo, says Bose (see the Sony note below)All seven (boAt's spec table leaves optical out on the B160)

We took the format rows from Bose's Dolby Atmos compatibility guide, which also says Atmos does not travel over Bluetooth.

Sony's Bar 6 spec sheet does list Dolby Atmos among the formats on its optical input, which Bose's guide says optical cannot carry. For Atmos on the Bar 6, use eARC, which Sony's sheet confirms.

Bose notes that most streaming apps send Atmos as Dolby Digital Plus, so an ARC TV still passes Atmos from apps. Blu-ray discs usually use lossless Dolby TrueHD, which needs eARC on both the TV and the bar.

Older TV with no ARC port? Use optical, or the 3.5mm AUX (analogue) input on the Sony HT-S20R, boAt B160 or Zebronics 3902.

Are soundbar watts RMS or peak, and do they matter?

Indian listings mix the two, and many do not say which. RMS is the power an amplifier can keep up. Peak or maximum power is a short burst. Since makers measure in different ways, treat watts as a rough loudness hint. The Sony Bar 6, the most expensive pick, lists just 350W.

SoundbarWatts listedHow the maker measures
Zebronics Juke Bar 390280W, 100W or 140WRMS for the 100W and 140W versions, but the shop page says 80W
boAt Aavante Bar Prime B160160WAmazon: "160W RMS of total peak output" (mixes two measures)
JBL Cinema SB190380W (800W in Amazon's tech table)Maximum power at 1% distortion

JBL Cinema SB590440WMaximum power at 1% distortion
LG S65TR600W and 440W600W "reference" at 30% distortion, 440W "rated" at 10%
Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6350WNot stated

THD (total harmonic distortion) measures how much the amplifier distorts the sound at that power. LG's 600W figure allows 30% distortion, so its 440W rated figure is the fairer one. For this reason we do not rank these bars on watts.

Speaker watts are not your electricity use. Sony lists the HT-S20R's power draw at about 40W, so four hours a day comes to 4.8 units a month, about ₹38 at ₹8 a unit.

Which soundbar size fits your TV and room?

Choose a bar about as wide as your TV screen, or a little narrower. A compact 2.1 bar is enough for a bedroom. For a living room where you can place speakers behind the sofa, a 5.1 system with rear speakers gives real surround sound.

Channel numbers tell you where the sound comes from. 2.1 means left and right speakers plus a subwoofer (a separate box for deep bass). 3.1 adds a centre speaker for dialogue, and 5.1 adds two rear speakers. In 3.1.2, the last 2 counts up-firing speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling.

We worked out each TV's screen width from its diagonal (a 16:9 screen's width is 0.87 times its diagonal), then matched the bar widths the makers list.

TV sizeScreen widthBest-matched bars

43-inchabout 95cmJBL SB590 (95cm), Sony Bar 6 (95cm), JBL SB190 (90cm), LG S65TR (85cm), Sony HT-S20R (76cm)
55-inch and 65-inchabout 122cm and 144cmNo pick is this wide. The widest are the JBL SB590 and Sony Bar 6 (95cm).

The Sony HT-S20R and boAt B160 use wired rear speakers, so a cable must run around the room. LG's rear speakers link to the bar wirelessly, so no cable runs from the bar to the back of the room, but they still need a power socket.

Around ₹13,974, rated 4.6 by 20,690 buyers, the most reviewed soundbar here.

A three-channel bar sits under the TV, a wired subwoofer adds bass, and two small wired rear speakers go behind you. Sony rates the total output at 400W.

The HT-S20R connects by HDMI ARC, optical, a 3.5mm analogue input or Bluetooth 5.0, and plays music from a USB stick. It decodes Dolby Digital 5.1 and has Night and Voice modes for late viewing and clearer dialogue.

The bar is 76cm wide, and Sony's spec sheet lists it as not wall-mountable. Sony does not publish the size of the subwoofer's driver, the speaker inside it. Amazon's tech table lists a 12-inch wireless subwoofer, which does not match Sony's sheet (wired, size not published).

  • Buy it if you want true surround sound from rear speakers for about ₹14,000 and can run wires to the back of the room.
  • Worth knowing: the HT-S20R lacks Dolby Atmos and eARC.

The SB190 is the only pick under ₹10,000 with HDMI eARC and a wireless subwoofer. This 2.1 system pairs a 90cm bar with a 6.5-inch wireless subwoofer that needs only a power socket nearby.

JBL rates the SB190 at 380W, measured as maximum power at 1% distortion: 2 x 90W in the bar and 200W in the subwoofer.

Connections are HDMI eARC, one HDMI input, optical and Bluetooth 5.1. JBL calls its Dolby Atmos "virtual" because the bar has no up-firing speakers. Instead, the bar's sound processing imitates sound from above. A Voice button on the remote lifts dialogue. A wall-mount kit and an HDMI cable come in the box.

  • Buy it if you want eARC and a wireless subwoofer for under ₹8,000.
  • Worth knowing: with no rear speakers, all sound comes from the front.

Around ₹4,999, rated 4.1 by 2,411 buyers. The listing looks new, so some of these ratings may come from other versions of the bar that share the page.

For under ₹5,000, the B160 gives you a 5.1 layout: a 68cm bar, a wired subwoofer with a 5.25-inch driver, and two wired rear satellite speakers.

boAt lists 160W, which the Amazon description calls "RMS of total peak output". That mixes two measures, so treat the number as a rough guide.

The B160 connects by HDMI ARC, AUX, USB and Bluetooth 5.3. Optical appears in boAt's description but not in its spec table. Movie, News and Music modes sit on the remote, and a wall-mount kit comes in the box.

  • Buy it if you want rear-speaker surround sound on the smallest budget.
  • Skip it if you want Dolby Atmos or eARC.

The SB590 adds what the SB190 lacks: a dedicated centre channel, which JBL says keeps film and TV dialogue clear. This 3.1 system has a 95cm bar with three racetrack drivers and three tweeters, plus a 6.5-inch wireless subwoofer.

JBL rates the SB590 at 440W (240W bar, 200W subwoofer), maximum at 1% distortion. Connections are HDMI eARC, one HDMI input, optical and Bluetooth 5.3.

Like the SB190, the SB590 accepts Atmos over eARC but has no up-firing speakers, so JBL calls its Atmos "virtual".

  • Buy it if you watch dialogue-heavy films and serials and want Atmos support with eARC for under ₹20,000.
  • Worth knowing: for sound from above, the Sony Bar 6 has real up-firing speakers for about ₹15,000 more.

The Bar 6 is the only pick here with up-firing speakers, which Sony says create an overhead soundscape. Sony calls the layout 3.1.2: left, centre and right speakers, a wireless subwoofer, and two up-firing units. Sony does not publish the subwoofer's driver size.

Through HDMI eARC, the Bar 6 plays Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD and DTS:X (a rival 3D sound format), according to Sony's spec sheet. It also has optical, Bluetooth 5.3 with AAC, and Night and Voice modes. The BRAVIA Connect phone app handles setup.

Sony lists 350W of total output, less than the HT-S20R's 400W. The 95cm bar is wall-mountable, with a mounting template in the box. It is as wide as a 43-inch screen, so on a 55-inch or larger TV it sits narrower than the screen.

  • Buy it if you stream films in Dolby Atmos and want height effects without fitting ceiling speakers.
  • Worth knowing: the bar has no HDMI input, so a set-top box or console must plug into the TV first.

The S65TR is a 5.1 system. Amazon's listing says the subwoofer is wireless, and LG says the rear speakers connect wirelessly to the bar, so no cable runs from the bar to the back of the room.

LG says the two rear speakers need one power cable, plus a speaker cable (in the box) that joins them. LG does not publish the subwoofer's driver size.

LG lists 600W "reference" and 440W "rated" output. Use 440W when comparing the S65TR with other bars. A wall-mount bracket comes in the box, and the bar is 85cm wide.

Connections are HDMI ARC, optical, USB and Bluetooth 5.3. The S65TR decodes Dolby Digital and DTS, and its modes include AI Sound Pro, Clear Voice Pro, Cinema and Sports. It supports HDMI CEC (LG Simplink), and LG offers a remote app for iOS and Android.

  • Buy it if you want 5.1 surround sound without running a cable from the bar to the rear speakers.
  • Worth knowing: the S65TR uses HDMI ARC rather than eARC and does not support Dolby Atmos.

At 60cm wide, the Juke Bar 3902 is the smallest bar here, and its wired subwoofer is only 10cm wide. The set fits a bedroom TV unit or a 32-inch TV.

This 2.1 system has a 4.5-inch (11.43cm) subwoofer driver. "Virtual 5.1" on the box means processing, not extra speakers. Amazon's tech table calls the subwoofer wireless, but Zebronics' shop page says wired.

Zebronics sells 100W and 140W RMS versions, so check the output on the box when it arrives.

The 3902 connects by HDMI ARC, optical, 3.5mm AUX, USB and Bluetooth 5.0, and wall-mount fasteners come in the box.

  • Buy it if you want clearer TV sound in a bedroom or small room for under ₹4,000.
  • Skip it if you want room-filling bass in a large living room. The boAt B160 adds rear speakers for about ₹1,000 more.

Which soundbar brand is best in India?

Sony and JBL lead this list. Sony has the most-reviewed bar and the only true Atmos pick, and JBL gives eARC and wireless subwoofers for less. LG suits buyers who want wireless rear speakers, while boAt and Zebronics win on price.

For music around the house, see our best portable Bluetooth speakers.

What to check before you buy

  • Output (watts). Compare the maker's figure and how the maker measured it. RMS or "rated" figures are fairer than peak or "reference" ones.
  • Channels. 2.1 for a small room, 3.1 for clearer dialogue, 5.1 for sound from behind, 3.1.2 for Atmos height.
  • Subwoofer. Wired costs less. Wireless saves a cable but still needs a power socket. Note the driver size where the maker lists it.
  • Connections. Look for "ARC" or "eARC" next to your TV's HDMI ports. For Blu-ray Atmos, both TV and bar need eARC. Optical is the backup, and Bluetooth 5.0 or newer handles phone music.
  • Selling price. The boAt B160 lists an MRP of ₹23,990 but sells for around ₹4,999, so judge the selling price, not the percentage off.
  • Wall mounting. Most picks include a bracket or kit, but the Sony HT-S20R is not wall-mountable.
  • Warranty. The Sony, JBL, boAt and Zebronics listings show 1 year (boAt's own store adds 3 months). LG's listing does not state a term, so ask the seller. JBL's listings add free installation in select cities.

Which soundbar should you buy?

For most homes, buy the Sony HT-S20R at around ₹13,974 for real 5.1 sound with rear speakers, rated 4.6 by 20,690 buyers.

Under ₹10,000, the JBL Cinema SB190 at around ₹7,605 has a wireless subwoofer and HDMI eARC, but no rear speakers. Under ₹5,000, the boAt Aavante Bar Prime B160 still gives you rear speakers.

For Atmos sound from above, choose the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6 at around ₹34,989 and connect it to your TV's eARC port.

Frequently asked questions

Which soundbar is best for home in India?

For most homes, the Sony HT-S20R at around ₹13,974. It is a real 5.1 system with a three-channel bar, two wired rear speakers and a wired subwoofer, rated at 400W by Sony. It connects by HDMI ARC, optical or Bluetooth 5.0, and 20,690 buyers on Amazon.in rate it 4.6.

Which is the best soundbar under ₹10,000?

The JBL Cinema SB190 at around ₹7,605. It is a 2.1 system with a 6.5-inch wireless subwoofer, HDMI eARC, optical and Bluetooth 5.1. JBL rates it at 380W, measured as maximum power at 1% distortion. Its Dolby Atmos is virtual, because the bar has no up-firing speakers. It is rated 4.1 by 934 buyers.

Which is the best soundbar under ₹5,000?

The boAt Aavante Bar Prime B160 at around ₹4,999 gives 5.1 sound with a wired 5.25-inch subwoofer and two wired rear speakers, plus HDMI ARC and Bluetooth 5.3. boAt lists 160W. For a bedroom or small room, the Zebronics Juke Bar 3902 at around ₹3,999 is a compact 2.1 set with a 60cm bar.

Do I need HDMI eARC for Dolby Atmos?

Not for streaming apps. Bose explains that HDMI ARC carries Dolby Atmos in compressed Dolby Digital Plus form, which most streaming services use. Lossless Atmos in Dolby TrueHD, usually used on Blu-ray discs, needs eARC on both the TV and the soundbar. Bose also says Atmos does not travel over optical or Bluetooth.

Is a 5.1 soundbar better than a 2.1 soundbar?

For surround sound, yes. A 2.1 soundbar has left and right speakers plus a subwoofer, so all sound comes from the front. A 5.1 system adds a centre speaker and two rear speakers behind you. Choose 2.1 for a bedroom or small room, and 5.1 if you can place rear speakers behind the sofa.

Are soundbar watts RMS or peak?

It depends on the brand, and many listings do not say. JBL measures maximum power at 1% distortion, LG lists 600W at 30% distortion and 440W at 10%, and Sony does not state a method. Since makers measure differently, treat watts as a rough guide. The Sony Bar 6, the most expensive pick here, lists just 350W.
