How to test your webcam
Press Start camera test and allow access. Your live preview appears immediately, along with the resolution and frame rate the camera is actually delivering. Check that the image is sharp, correctly exposed and the right way up, then take a snapshot to inspect detail at full size.
The preview is mirrored by default because that is what video-call apps show you. Mirroring affects only your own view — the person on the other end always sees the unmirrored image, which is why text held up to a webcam looks backwards to you but reads correctly to them. Turn mirroring off to see what they see.
What resolution is my webcam really?
The number above is measured from the actual video stream, not read from a marketing spec. This test asks for 1080p and reports whatever the camera can genuinely deliver, so a webcam advertised as “Full HD” that reports 1280 × 720 is upscaling — a common finding on cheap USB cameras and older laptops.
| Reported | Name | Verdict for calls |
|---|---|---|
| 640 × 480 | VGA | Dated — visibly soft, common on budget laptops |
| 1280 × 720 | 720p HD | Fine for meetings; still the most common laptop webcam |
| 1920 × 1080 | 1080p Full HD | Good; sharp enough for recording and streaming |
| 2560 × 1440 or more | 1440p / 4K | Excellent, but most calling apps downscale it anyway |
Frame rate matters as much as resolution. 30 fps looks natural; anything near 15 fps looks stuttery and is usually caused by poor lighting, because the camera lengthens its exposure to compensate for a dark room.
Why is my webcam showing a black screen?
A black preview with no error message almost always means another application already holds the camera. Windows and macOS allow only one app exclusive access at a time, so Zoom, Teams, Meet, Discord, OBS or the Camera app will block the browser silently. Quit the app completely, then reload this page.
- Privacy shutter: many laptops have a physical slider over the lens, or a Fn key that disables the camera in firmware. Check both.
- Windows:Settings → Privacy & security → Camera, and make sure camera access and desktop-app access are both on.
- macOS:System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, then tick your browser.
- Blocked permission: if you pressed Block once, the browser will not ask again. Clear it from the padlock icon in the address bar.
Checking a second-hand laptop's camera
On a used device, look past “does it turn on”. Confirm the reported resolution matches what the model is supposed to have, watch the measured frame rate for a few seconds to catch a failing sensor that drops frames, and check the snapshot for a milky haze — a sign of moisture damage behind the lens. Then run the microphone test, because a laptop camera and its microphone array often fail together after liquid damage.

Frequently asked questions
Is this webcam test safe? Is my video recorded?
It is safe. The video stream is rendered directly in your browser and no frame is ever uploaded, logged or stored by TopTechs. Snapshots are created in your browser's memory and disappear when you close the tab. The camera light goes out as soon as you press Stop.
Can I test my webcam and microphone at the same time?
This page tests the camera only, deliberately — asking for both permissions at once means one refusal blocks both tests. Run the microphone test straight afterwards; together they cover everything a video call needs.
Why does my camera look grainy or dark?
Almost always lighting, not the camera. Webcam sensors are tiny, so they need far more light than a phone. Face a window or put a lamp behind your screen pointing at you, and avoid a bright window behind you — backlighting forces the camera to expose for the window and leaves your face in shadow.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, and both cameras are available. Use the camera picker to switch between the front and rear lenses; the rear camera will report a much higher resolution than the selfie camera on most phones.
