How to test your speakers

Turn your system volume down to about a quarter first. Press Play left — you should hear a steady tone from the left side only. Then press Play right. If both sides produce sound at roughly equal volume and each one comes from the correct side, your output is working and correctly wired.

Unlike a balance slider, this test uses a channel merger to send the tone to one channel and true silence to the other, so there is no bleed between sides. That makes a genuinely dead driver unmistakable.

What is the human hearing range?

Healthy young human hearing spans roughly 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The top of that range falls with age — a process called presbycusis — and most adults over 30 stop hearing much above 15–16 kHz. Losing the top octave is normal and does not affect speech or music, which live mostly between 80 Hz and 8 kHz.

Use the sweep to find your own limit: start it, listen, and note the number where the tone vanishes. Two caveats make this indicative rather than clinical — small speakers physically cannot reproduce very low or very high frequencies, and no browser test can control for the volume you set. It tells you about your gear as much as your ears.

  • 20–60 Hz — deep bass. Laptop and phone speakers reproduce almost none of this, so silence here is normal.
  • 100–250 Hz — bass and the fundamentals of most voices.
  • 440 Hz — concert-pitch A, the safest all-round test tone.
  • 1–4 kHz — where human hearing is most sensitive and speech clarity lives.
  • 10 kHz and up — air and sparkle in music, and the first band lost with age.

Is my speaker damaged or just small?

A damaged driver distorts, rattles or buzzes at frequencies where it should be clean, and the problem is repeatable at the same frequency every time. A small speaker simply produces nothing at the extremes — clean silence at 30 Hz on a laptop is physics, not a fault. Set the tone to 440 Hz and raise the volume gradually: if it stays clean there, the driver is intact.

Rattles that only appear at certain frequencies often come from the case, not the driver — a loose port cover or a phone case resonating. Take the case off and test again before you write off the speaker.

Testing headphones and earbuds

Wear them normally and run the left and right tests. Then use Auto L / R, which alternates sides every 1.3 seconds — this makes an imbalance far easier to hear than comparing from memory. On true wireless earbuds, test each bud with the other one in its case, because many models silently fall back to mono when one bud disconnects.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I hear the tone from both sides when I press Left?

Either your device has a single speaker, or your audio output is set to mono. On Windows check Settings → Accessibility → Audio for a “Mono audio” switch; on iOS and Android the same option lives under Accessibility. Bluetooth speakers frequently downmix to mono regardless.

Is this speaker test safe for my hearing or my speakers?

The output is capped well below full scale and every tone ramps in smoothly rather than starting with a click, which protects drivers. The real risk is your own volume setting, so start low. Avoid holding high-frequency tones at loud volumes near your ears — that is genuinely uncomfortable and unnecessary.

Can I test a soundbar or home theatre with this?

You can test the front left and right channels, which is what a stereo browser output can address. Surround and subwoofer channels need a multichannel test source, so use your receiver's built-in channel test tones for those.

The tone sounds wobbly or distorted. Is my speaker broken?

Try a lower volume first. Most small speakers distort well before their maximum volume, and what sounds like damage at 80% is often clean at 30%. If distortion persists at low volume at 440 Hz, the driver is likely damaged.
