The best microwave oven for most Indian families is the IFB 30L Convection (30BRC2) at around ₹16,490. It reheats, defrosts, grills and bakes, and it has a rotisserie for tandoori dishes. Nearly 7,000 buyers on Amazon.in rate it 4.4.
IFB covers the magnetron (the part that produces the microwaves) and the cavity (the inner box) for 3 years.
If you only reheat food and make tea, a ₹6,690 solo microwave is all you need. To grill paneer tikka, a grill model is enough. To bake cakes, you need a convection model.

Solo, grill or convection: which microwave should you buy?
Buy a convection microwave if you want to bake or roast, a grill microwave if you want toast and tikka, and a solo microwave if you only reheat and defrost. A convection model does everything the other two do, so it suits most families who cook more than leftovers.
- A solo microwave heats food with microwaves only. It reheats, defrosts, boils milk and cooks simple dishes, but it cannot brown or crisp food.
- A grill microwave adds a heating element at the top, so it can toast sandwiches and grill paneer or chicken.
- A convection microwave adds a fan and heater that circulate hot air, like a small oven. It bakes cakes, pizza and cookies, and it also grills and microwaves.
Wikipedia's article on the microwave oven explains how microwaves heat food, if you are curious.
What size microwave do you need?
Choose 20 litres for one or two people, 23 to 25 litres for a family of three or four, and 28 to 30 litres for four to six people or regular baking. These are the family sizes the makers themselves recommend. A bigger cavity also fits a full dinner plate and a larger cake tin.

Microwave or OTG: which is better?
For most homes, a convection microwave is better, because it bakes like an OTG and also reheats and defrosts in minutes. An OTG (oven, toaster, grill) only bakes, toasts and grills. Choose an OTG as a second appliance if you bake large batches often, or want a microwave and oven running together.
How much electricity does a microwave use?
Less than most people expect, because it runs for only a few minutes at a time. IFB estimates about 11.3 units a month for its 900W models at 25 minutes of use a day. Convection and grill modes draw more power than plain microwaving, so heavy baking adds to the bill.
Most home inverters cannot run a microwave during a power cut. Our inverter guide explains which appliances an inverter can run.
Which microwave oven brand is best in India?
IFB, Panasonic, LG and Samsung are the four brands we recommend. IFB has the most-reviewed convection model here and a 3-year magnetron and cavity warranty.
Panasonic makes our solo and grill picks and gives a 4-year magnetron warranty on its convection oven. LG adds a Health Plus menu for low-calorie cooking, and Samsung gives the longest cavity warranty.
What to check before you buy
- Type. Convection to bake, grill to toast, solo to reheat.
- Size. 20L for one or two people, 23 to 25L for three or four, 28L and up for bigger families.
- Cavity. Stainless steel or ceramic enamel lasts longer than a painted, powder-coated cavity and is easier to clean.
- Magnetron warranty. 3 to 4 years is good. It is the most expensive part to replace.
- Counter space. Leave the air gap the manual asks for at the sides, back and top.
- Containers. Use glass or microwave-safe plastic in microwave mode, and keep metal out unless the manual allows it in convection mode.
A microwave pairs well with an induction cooktop in a small kitchen: one heats and bakes, the other cooks on a pan.
Which microwave oven should you buy?
For most families, buy the IFB 30L Convection (30BRC2) at around ₹16,490. It does everything from reheating to roasting, and nearly 7,000 buyers rate it 4.4.
For a smaller family or budget, the Panasonic 23L Convection at around ₹10,790 bakes and grills too, and it carries a 4-year magnetron warranty.
If you only reheat, the Panasonic 20L Solo at around ₹6,690 is all you need. Want air frying as well? Choose the IFB 28L Air Fry.
