The ₹999 camera that records nothing
Search CCTV camera for home on Amazon.in and sort by price. The first page fills with Hikvision and CP Plus cameras between ₹925 and ₹1,999, and several of their titles include the words Compatible with DVR only.
These are wired analogue cameras. They send video down a cable and do nothing else. A camera like that is one component of a system, and on its own it records nothing.
To make a ₹999 camera work you also need:
- A DVR, the recorder every camera plugs into, from about ₹3,000.
- A hard disk to record onto, from about ₹2,500 for 1TB.
- Coaxial and power cable run from each camera back to the DVR.
- A power supply unit for the cameras.
- An installer, because this involves drilling and pulling cable through walls.
A more honest comparison is the CP Plus 4-channel kit at ₹8,928, which includes the DVR, three outdoor cameras and one indoor camera. That figure, plus a hard disk and labour, is what a wired system actually costs.
Wired systems remain the right answer for covering the outside of a house with four or more cameras. Just read ₹999 as the price of a part rather than of a working camera.
Wi-Fi camera or wired system: which one do you want
Most people searching for a home CCTV camera want a Wi-Fi camera.
- A Wi-Fi camera plugs into a socket, joins your network and records to a microSD card. You set it up yourself in ten minutes and watch it from your phone, for one price with nothing else to buy.
- A wired system means four or more cameras, a DVR, a hard disk, cabling and an installer. It covers a whole property, keeps running when the internet drops, and costs ₹12,000 upwards installed.
Choose Wi-Fi for a flat, one room, a baby, elderly parents or a shop counter. Choose wired for a house with several outdoor angles, or anywhere you need weeks of continuous footage.
Mixing the two is also common and sensible: a wired system outside, a Wi-Fi camera or two inside.
Best CCTV camera for home overall: Kasa Smart Pan-Tilt

Kasa Smart Pan-Tilt
Works on its own, records locally, 4.3 stars from 5,948 buyers.
~₹4,684Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹4,684, rated 4.3 from 5,948 buyers. No other camera here has both a rating that high and that many reviews.
Kasa is TP-Link's smart home brand, so this comes from a networking company rather than a camera importer, and the app is better for it. Setup takes a few minutes and the connection is reliable, which is where cheaper cameras usually fail.
It pans and tilts to cover a whole room, records 1080p to a microSD card with no subscription, and has motion detection that sends a notification rather than a constant stream of them.
It is an indoor camera. For outside, take the Hikvision ColorVu below.
- Buy it if you want one indoor camera that works without fuss and without a monthly fee.
- Skip it if you need it outdoors, or on a balcony where rain can reach.
Best for outdoors: Hikvision ColorVu

Hikvision ColorVu
Colour night vision outdoors, the best-rated wired camera here.
~₹2,499Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹2,499, rated 4.1 from 500 buyers. The best-rated wired camera we found.
ColorVu is the feature worth paying for. Ordinary night vision gives you a grey image where a person is an outline. ColorVu records in colour after dark, so a shirt has a colour and a car has a number plate you can read.
It is IP67 rated, so rain and dust are fine, and it is built to run continuously for years.
This camera needs a DVR. Budget for the full system rather than the ₹2,499.
- Buy it if you are building or extending a wired system and want usable night footage.
- Skip it if you want one camera working today. It records nothing without a recorder.
Best full system: CP Plus 4-channel kit

CP Plus 4-channel kit
DVR plus four cameras in one box, the sensible start for a house.
~₹8,928Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹8,928, rated 3.8 from 47 buyers.
A 4-channel 1080p DVR, three outdoor cameras and one indoor camera in one box. Buying those pieces separately usually costs more and leaves you matching connectors.
CP Plus has the widest service network in India for wired CCTV, which matters when a camera fails in year three.
You still need to add a hard disk, roughly ₹2,500 for 1TB, and installation. Expect ₹13,000 to ₹15,000 all in.
- Buy it if you want to cover the outside of a house properly.
- Worth knowing: 47 ratings is thin. The brand is established in wired CCTV, but this listing has little feedback.
Best doorbell: TP-Link Tapo D230S1

TP-Link Tapo D230S1
2K battery doorbell with two-way talk and no wiring to the door.
~₹9,699Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹9,699, rated 4.1 from 2,070 buyers.
Battery powered, so there is no wiring to the door frame. It shoots 2K, which is sharp enough to recognise a face at the gate, and you can talk to the delivery agent through it without opening the door.
It ships with a chime unit that plugs into a socket inside, and footage is stored locally.
- Buy it if the entrance is the thing you actually want to watch.
- Worth knowing: battery life depends on how busy your door is. A busy doorway means charging the doorbell more often.
Best sharpness: D-Link 2K Pan & Tilt
Around ₹6,984, rated 4.1 from 50 buyers.
At 2K it records more detail than the 1080p cameras above it, and that matters in one situation: looking back at footage and needing to read something small. A face at the far end of a room, or writing on a parcel.
It turns through 360 degrees and listens as well as watches, so a crash in an empty room sends you a notification even when nothing walks past the camera.
- Buy it if the room is large and you want the most detail in the recording.
- Skip it if ₹2,300 matters more than sharpness. The Kasa covers the same job at 1080p.
- Worth knowing: 50 ratings is the smallest number of reviews among the Wi-Fi cameras here.
Most affordable Wi-Fi camera: Qubo Smart Cam 360

Qubo Smart Cam 360
4MP and 360 degrees under ₹4,000, with 7,869 ratings behind it.
~₹3,904Amazon.in
Check price →Around ₹3,904, rated 3.7 from 7,869 buyers. That is the largest review base in this category by a distance.
Qubo is a Hero Group brand, so support is Indian and reachable. You get 4MP, colour night vision and 360-degree coverage for under ₹4,000.
The 3.7 rating is the honest catch. Across nearly 8,000 ratings, enough owners report app and connection trouble to pull the average down. The Kasa costs ₹780 more and rates 4.3.
- Buy it if you want the lowest price from a brand with real Indian support.
- Skip it if you can spend ₹780 more. The Kasa is a better camera by every measure here.
The same camera sold under three different names
Searching this category turns up a pattern worth recognising. On one results page we found three listings for a 5MP indoor Wi-Fi camera, all priced between ₹2,079 and ₹2,089, with the same specification wording and near-identical photographs.
The brand names were Guard Well, MacCam and Dr Vision. Their ratings were 4.1, 4.6 and 2.4.
Identical hardware does not produce ratings that far apart. More likely it is the same factory product relabelled by different sellers, with review histories too short to trust, high or low.
Two practical rules come out of that:
- Treat an unfamiliar brand with a near-perfect rating and few reviews as unproven. A 4.6 from 40 buyers tells you less than a 3.7 from 7,869.
- Prefer brands with a service path in India. Hikvision, CP Plus, TP-Link, Kasa, Qubo, Imou and D-Link all have one. A camera that fails in month seven is worth nothing without it.
One more worth noting: CP Plus is strong in wired CCTV, and its Wi-Fi cameras rate between 2.3 and 3.6 across the listings we checked. A good brand in one category is not automatically good in another.
Memory card, cloud or hard disk
Storage is the running cost people miss, so check it before you buy rather than after.
- microSD card. The camera records to a card inside it. You pay once for the card. A 64GB card stores roughly a week of motion clips. All the Wi-Fi cameras here support this.
- Cloud. Footage uploads to the brand's servers, usually as a monthly or yearly plan. Useful because a thief who takes the camera cannot take the recording.
- Hard disk in a DVR. For wired systems. A 1TB disk stores two to four weeks of continuous footage from four cameras.
Buy a card rated for continuous recording. Ordinary cards are built for a camera that writes in bursts, and a security camera writing all day will wear one out within a year.
What to check before you buy
- Confirm it works on its own. If the title says DVR only, it is a component rather than a camera.
- Match the camera to the place. Indoor cameras fail outdoors. Look for IP65 or IP67 for anywhere exposed to rain.
- Check night vision type. Infrared gives grey images. Colour night vision gives you clothing and vehicle colours.
- Ask what needs a subscription. Local recording should be free. Confirm which features stop working without a plan.
- Check the Wi-Fi band. Most of these cameras connect only to 2.4GHz. If your router broadcasts one combined network, you may need to split it.
- Read the review count, not only the score. A 4.6 from 40 ratings is weaker evidence than a 4.3 from 5,948.
Which camera to buy
For one camera indoors, buy the Kasa Smart Pan-Tilt at around ₹4,684. It works in ten minutes, records locally with no monthly fee, and 5,948 buyers rate it 4.3.
To cover the outside of a house, the CP Plus 4-channel kit at ₹8,928 is the sensible starting point, with a hard disk and fitting on top.
To add cameras to a wired system you already have, the Hikvision ColorVu at ₹2,499 gives you night footage you can actually identify people from.
Whatever you pick, settle one question first: does this camera record on its own, or is it a part of something you have not bought yet. That answer separates a ₹999 disappointment from a working camera.
